Space Station Freedom
In the 1980s, NASA envisioned a space station that would serve as an on-orbit laboratory, factory, and spacecraft repair shop. Space Station Freedom didn't ever really work out, but it did become the basis for the International Space Station, and there, bits of Freedom live on today.
